Dr Boris Chern

Dr Boris Chern was born in Burma 45 years ago. Shortly after his family moved to Australia and settled in Cairns. He started his schooling at Cairns Central Primary School and the Edge Hill Primary. One of his passions, fishing, was born out his love of life in the tropics. A passion he now finds difficult to pursue because of his busy schedule.

After moving Brisbane and attending Pine Rivers High School, he chose to follow the path of Medicine which led him to University of Queensland. In 1989 he received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. In 1998 he became a FRACP(Medical Oncology) and in 2000 he became a FRAChPM(Palliative Care)

Dr Chern served his internship at Rockhampton Base Hospital and his residency at Princess Alexander Hospital. He has received further training in haematology, oncology and palliative care at Royal Brisbane Hospital, Mater Newcastle and Mater Brisbane Hospital.

Dr Chern has strong clinical and research experience in all aspects of oncology, including breast cancer, prostate cancer and palliative care. Seeing more then 400 new patients each year through regional outreach centres, he has participated in more then 30 clinical trials, both institutional and multi-centred Phase I and II studies as well as large international randomised trials.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Chern has presented his research at various regional medical meetings.

Since 1999 Dr Chern has served as District Director of Cancer Care for the Redcliffe-Caboolture District in Queensland Australia.

Married twenty years to his wife Lyn, they have three young children. With his busy lifestyle, Dr Chern still allows himself one passion apart from his family, cooking.

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that without Boris Chern the establishment of the Redcliffe Hospital Foundation would have waited many more years.

A man of foresight and inspiration.
